"Donna con bambino” (Woman with child) 1949 Verona stone H. 120 cm
Alik Cavaliere, Rome 1926 - Milan 1998.
Son of the writer Alberto Cavaliere and of the sculptress Fanny Kaufmann, Alik Cavaliere studied at the Brera Academy following the courses of Manzù, Funi and Marino Marini who chose him as his assistant in 1965 and whom he succeded as head of sculpture in 1970.
Cavaliere frequented Paris and the Dadaist circles including Marcel Duchamp himself, developing his own very personal sculptural language in continuous connection with painting, theater and scenography.
Elena Pontiggia says of him: "The work of Alik Cavaliere, rethought today in all its complexity, appears to us as a meditation on nature and on some of the vastest topics in post-war sculpture."
He has held many exhibitions in Italy and abroad, has been invited to numerous biennials around the world, his great personal room at the Venice Biennale in 1972 is memorable.
In recent years, the major exhibitions dedicated to him by the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome and the Palazzo Reale in Milan are worth noting.
He founded the Alik Cavaliere Art Center in Milan, where a large part of his archive is still located, managed by his daughter, the writer Fania Cavaliere.
